Today Shaping Tomorrow

Robert A. Reiser and John V. Dempsey discuss theories and foundations of instructional design in chapter four of Trends and Issues in Instructional Design and Technology (2007). They highlight the historical events as they relate to instructional design theories. Currently, in the so-called "digital age", the significance of relevant and timely information is key, however without any schema to build upon this knowledge or management system , how much knowledge gets lost in the shuffle? Instructional designers will need to develop a way for learners to efficiently manage the influx of information. With tweets, Facebook updates, Blogs, and iPhone applications, how much learning is actually going on?

Additionally if instructional designers want to maintain learners attention, they will need to provide educational experiences that mimic the fast paced lifestyle they lead. Gagne's theory of instruction would need to be streamlined to get the most in the littlest time. Nine events of instruction are too time consuming and the learners will become bored. Learning needs to be fast paced and fun.
